I.         JOB SUMMARY 

The purpose of this position is to install, maintain, and repair both high and low voltage electrical systems and traffic signal equipment.  May also provide assistance during special events, as needed, and other duties as required.


Requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature that may be obtained with six-months/one year of advanced study or training past the high school equivalency.  Community college, vocational, business, technical, or correspondence schools are likely sources.  Appropriate certification may be awarded upon satisfactory completion of advanced study or training.

 Requires one (1) to three (3) years' experience in electrical field or Licensed as a Journeyman Level Electrician.  


  • Applicant will be subject to a complete background investigation.  Incomplete, inaccurate and/or failure to report information will cause the applicant rejection from consideration.
  • Applicant must take and pass a pre-employment drug test administered by the City of Edinburg at the City's expense.
  • Must have a current valid class "B" Commercial Driver's License from the Texas Department of Public Safety with a satisfactory driving record.
  • Electrician's (Journeyman) License.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish Preferred.


  • Requires a working knowledge of City and National electrical codes.
  • Work requires a comprehensive, practical knowledge of a technical field with use of analytical judgment and decision-making abilities appropriate to the work environment of the organization.
  • Basic computer skills in a Microsoft Windows environment; includes Excel, Word, Publisher, database management, and record keeping.
  • Knowledge of safety and accident prevention procedures.
  • Skill in utilizing special electrical tools, ability to read blueprints and schematics.
  • Thorough knowledge of electrical processes of pump panel motors; ability to diagnose electrical problems and repair minor ones; knowledge of low to high voltage trouble-shooting techniques for pumps panels and motors.

  •  Set up and program new traffic control systems in accordance with approved plans; assemble all signal hardware; troubleshoot electrical systems to diagnose electrical problems and perform required repairs; perform preventative maintenance, troubleshoot, and repair all aspects of city owned traffic signal control boxes, flashing beacons and school beacons.
  • Build concrete foundations for controller cabinets; maintain pavement markings on city-owned parking facilities and all city streets, including lane channelizations, traffic hazards, school-pedestrian crosswalks, railroad crossings and delineations.
  • Make estimates of required time and materials needed to complete assigned tasks; maintain accurate records of time and materials used in the maintenance and repair history of all electrical equipment.
  • Operate bucket truck, dump trucks, pavement marking and sign making equipment as well as hi-range bucket truck during signal repair or installation of new signals.
  • Perform and/or coordinate traffic investigations (counts) and street surveys; respond to citizen complaints or questions.

Frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards.  Majority of work performed outside or with exposure to risk.


The job has some significant hazards and physical demands are heavy. Duties involve continuous bending, lifting, digging, carrying or walking, and/or using force equal to lifting 50-100 pounds.
