I.         JOB SUMMARY 

The purpose of this position is to performing preventive maintenance and repairs on City vehicles.  Other duties include inspecting and repairing fleet system components on vehicles and equipment, ensuring vehicles meet state and OM inspection requirements, and other duties as required.


Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature that may be obtained with six-months/one year of advanced study or training past the high school equivalency.  Community college, vocational, business, technical, or correspondence schools are likely sources.  Appropriate certification may be awarded upon satisfactory completion of advanced study or training.

 Requires one (1) to three (3) years' experience in vehicle and engine maintenance and repair.  


  • Applicant will be subject to a complete background investigation.  Incomplete, inaccurate and/or failure to report information will cause the applicant rejection from consideration.
  • Applicant must take and pass a pre-employment drug test administered by the City of Edinburg at the City's expense.
  • Must have a current valid class "A" or "B" CDL driver's license from the Texas Department of Public Safety with a satisfactory driving record preferred.
  • ASE Certification preferred.


  • Requires a working knowledge of vehicle and equipment repair and maintenance.
  • Work requires regular interaction involving exchange and receipt of information.
  • Normally performs the duty assignment after receiving general instructions as to methods, procedures, and desired end results. There is some opportunity for discretion when making selections among a few, easily identifiable choices. 
  • Work requires the use of standard technical skills appropriate to the work environment of the organization.
  • Basic computer skills in a Microsoft Windows environment.
  • Knowledge of safety and accident prevention procedures; knowledge of practices, methods, materials and tools used in modern equipment maintenance.
  • Knowledge of gas and diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulics, fire pumps and valves, generators, and welding.
  • Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to municipal maintenance and repair activities.

  •  Troubleshoot electrical systems on vehicles to diagnose electrical problems and performs required repairs; carry out daily equipment checks and evaluate preventive maintenance schedules for all vehicles and mechanical equipment.
  • Repair brake, engine, electrical, fuel, hydraulic, transmission, ignition, air, exhaust, axle assemblies and related systems; adjust brakes weekly; check ignition and charging systems for proper operation; perform engine overhaul services and/or engine replacements as needed; check and replace engine and vehicle fluids, as needed; cut and weld metal and performs body repair, touch up and related work
  • Maintain all vehicles in satisfactory condition to meet state inspection requirements
  • Maintain an inventory of equipment and supplies/parts needed for preventive vehicle maintenance; provide welding support equipment; process invoices for suppliers and vendors who provide equipment, supplies and services for operations
  • Make estimates of required time and parts needed to complete required repairs; maintain accurate records of time and materials used in the maintenance and repair history of all city vehicles serviced as well as thorough and accurate detailed records/logs on fuel usage, equipment usage, parts requisitions and related matters; prepare reports and summary sheets, as required.
  • Provide emergency field assistance to disabled equipment and vehicles as needed and appropriate.

Frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards.  Majority of work performed outside or with exposure to risk.


The job has some significant hazards and physical demands are high. Duties involve continuous bending, lifting, digging, carrying or walking, and/or using force equal to lifting 50-100 pounds.
