I.         JOB SUMMARY 

The purpose of this position is to operate one or more types of light maintenance or construction equipment utilized for associated department functions.  Other duties include ensuring the proper operation and maintenance of equipment, maintaining facility's landscaping structure, installing equipment, as needed, assists in direction of crew members, and other duties as required.

II.      EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS 

Requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes.  Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency.

 

Requires under and including one (1) year of experience operating light equipment along with thorough knowledge of safety procedures.

III.      EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS

  • Applicant will be subject to a complete background investigation.  Incomplete, inaccurate and/or failure to report information will cause the applicant rejection from consideration.
  • Applicant must take and pass a pre-employment drug test administered by the City of Edinburg at the City's expense.
  • Must have a current valid class "B" CDL driver's license from the Texas Department of Public Safety with a satisfactory driving record.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.

IV.       SKILL ABILITY REQUIREMENTS 

  • Requires a working knowledge of safe and efficient operation of power equipment.
  • Work requires regular interaction involving exchange and receipt of information.
  • Normally performs the duty assignment after receiving general instructions as to methods, procedures, and desired end results. There is some opportunity for discretion when making selections among a few, easily identifiable choices. 
  • Work requires the use of standard technical skills appropriate to the work environment of the organization.
  • Ability to use hand tools and power tools associated with work.
  • Requires a thorough knowledge of light equipment operation and safety procedures.

V.        ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Perform unskilled labor work related to various maintenance and construction activities, perform skilled work operating a street sweeper, and perform physical and manual work such as lifting, bending, stooping, walking on uneven surfaces, on a daily basis; participate in maintaining landscaping structures; assist in the installation of equipment or systems, as needed.
  • Operate light equipment such as small tractors, light trucks, and small sweepers; work with power tools (ex. drill, weed eaters, chain saw, etc.) daily; utilize safety equipment (such as gloves, goggles, hard hats, vests, support, belts, etc.) at all times; ensure that equipment is left in a good, clean and working order at end of shift.
  • Knowledge of the operating characteristics and limitations of the equipment being utilized, and of safe work practices and procedures related to the operation of assigned equipment including, but not limited to, light to medium equipment; perform service inspections and minor maintenance on equipment; read and follow written and oral instructions. 

VI.       EQUIPMENT/MATERIALS

General office and safety equipment/materials to include but not limited to the following:

  • Two-Way radio
  • Street Sweeper/Tractor
  • Light Maintenance Equipment as it applies to department
  • City Vehicle/Light Trucks
  • Gloves/Boots/Safety Goggles

VII.     WORK CONDITIONS

Frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards.  Majority of work performed outside or with exposure to risk.

VIII.   PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The job has some significant hazards and physical demands are heavy. Duties involve continuous bending, lifting, digging, carrying or walking, and/or using force equal to lifting 50-100 pounds.
